Over had to endure days of going with

Over
the past five years I have set myself
realistic goals and focus on achieving them one at a time. By doing this I have
always been successful such as passing my level
3 course whilst pregnant. The next
step for me is applying to Plymouth BA Honours Degree in Social Work. I chose
Plymouth for their excellent teaching methods, Univesity atmosphere, and their
full time route enables me to carry on with my home life commitments. Once I
qualify as a social worker I would like to work in a children and young people
setting and develop my counselling skills to help others.

My personal adversities that I had to deal
with in the past made me determined to become a social worker and use my own
experiences to help others facing similar difficulties.

As
far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a great interest in helping and
working with children and young people. Facing my own personal problems at the
tender age of three made me insightful beyond my years. Both of my parent leaving
myself and my four sibiling in Ghana(West Africa) to come to England to find a
better life, so leaving us with an
abusive Anutie. I had to endure days of going with out food, being beaten as
well as sexual abuse, this has helped me
develop empathy and sensitivity towards others, which
I feel are essential skills that a social worker requires.

I
am a mother of three children, this has given me great organisational skills
which have taught me to manage my time more effectively for whilst raising a
family and also work as a Teaching
Assistant which I am thoroughly enjoying. I also enjoy reading and socialising
when I get the opportunity. Prevousely being a mature student, I have to learnt how to communicate effectively, as
well as working within a team; use my initiative
and the ability to manage my time with work, study and home life. With full
support I’m receiving from my partner and children,  I know I can give the full commitment and
dedication needed for becoming a social worker.

I
chose social work because the principle
and code of ethics are directly in line with my world view. The principle of
self-determination cultural competency, social justice and advocacy describe my
own values. Social work would give me a way to put these values into practice
and allows me to have a job I truly believe in. as social workers I believe
that should be the change, big or small, and have the privilege of working
towards this everyday. My principle drive is
to bring awareness of social justice
issues by continuing to equip and empower the vulnerable and underrepresented children and young people of
our society. Whether it was my personal challenges living and working us a minority in a predominantly white society, struggling with a
basic eductational system, providing encouragdement to children, or working
with young people who face barriers to independence, every phase of my life
reflects my advocacy for those who have been marginalized by mainstream
culture.

One
of the wisest people I have ever met once told me
with every challenge lies an opportunity. This is a philosophy that I
have carried with me throughout my life and sought to find for myself.
