from Kuriakose Elias English Medium School, Kottayam- a prestigious, religious
and well-disciplined institution. I choose the science stream and graduated with
an overall score of 60%. It was my parent’s decision that I should study in
academically prominent and well disciplined School which had the infrastructure
one would find at any of the reputed schools in my country. The discipline and
the code of conduct in the campus are impeccable when compared to other schools
in Kerala, in this context; I should confess that it was this motivation and
guidance that prompted me to study bio medical science.

 My father Anilkumar Jesudas Valentine is
employed as a manager in a hotel, My mother Ritha Anilkumar is a school teacher
at Kollam. My dad has an annual income of six lakhs and my mom has an annual
income of three lakhs sixty thousand. Being the only child to my loving
parents, they always wanted to provide me with the best care and attention
including my education. My parents are fully cooperative with my ideas and are
ready to help me to achieve my dreams and ambitions. After completing my
secondary high school, like most of the science students I too went for medical
entrance coaching at an institute in my hometown called spencer from 6th
June 2016 to 8th May 2017. While attending some mock exams I found
it wasn’t feasible for me to continue with the coaching and examination.
Meanwhile I came to know about the bachelor degree course offered at Edith
Cowan University and the entry requirements was my +2 marks and IELTS score. So
I decided to go for it. I attended the IELTS exam and scored an overall 7.0 in
the academic module.

As a student, I’ve
always given keen interest to my various science subjects. I have continued to
exert effort in my science subjects as these subjects interest me greatly.
Being interested in the human body and in science, I always wanted to become a
medical research scientist in order to pursue this dream I need to attend
bachelor of biomedical science. Biomedical
scientists provide the foundation of modern healthcare and assist in developing
treatments for diseases. From cancer screening, diagnosis of HIV, design of new
drugs, food poisoning and infection control, biomedical scientists are helping
to make incredible advances in modern medical science. Working in partnership
with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, they carry out
clinical tests, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment, and research the
causes and cures for disease. By understanding how the human body works and
what goes wrong in disease, biomedical scientists apply their knowledge to
develop new treatments. During my studies I would be learning more about
the course modules such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology,
pharmacology and biomedical ethics. Graduates can continue on to specialise in
one of these laboratory disciplines: medical microbiology, clinical chemistry,
transfusion science, hematology, histopathology, cytology, virology,
immunology, medicine. Moreover, I have the burning passion to pursue this
degree, being inspired by various scientists and having the perseverance and
the thirst to learn more about these subjects that interest me. There are a
lots of Career opportunities, to name a few Biomedical engineer, Biochemist,
Biomedical scientist, Clinical biochemist, Clinical scientist, Forensic
scientist, Healthcare scientist, Microbiologist, Museum officer, Research
scientist. This program will provide me with
both the breadth and the depth of modern biomedical science. I will be able to
learn from researchers who are leaders in this area and benefit from their
latest knowledge of biomedical science developments. By integrating your study
across the various different discipline areas in the biomedical sciences, I
will graduate with a well-grounded and wide range of knowledge in biomedical
science and enter a rewarding career in modern biomedical science. I can also
use this program as a pathway to study medicine or allied health programs.

International
qualifications are preferred by most employers than Indian qualifications.
Foreign universities provide better technologies with a new way of studying.
Even though Indian universities are less expensive than foreign universities I
still wish to study in a foreign country because their education system is far
much better than India’s education system. In foreign universities education is
based on practicality than the theory based knowledge, Students get chance to
experiment with their ideas in foreign universities and also they are industrial
oriented. Most of the Indian universities are not accepted worldwide and they
do not come under 1000 in the world ranking, some universities in India which
offers bachelor of biomedical science are Bharath University, Jagdish Prasad
Jabarmal Tibrewala University, Sri Ramachandra Unversity, SRR and CVR
Government Degree College.

The main reason why I choose diploma of science (Health
studies) was due to my low score in mathematics, and I found this an
alternative path leading to my dream. Which I thought was feasible and it
also gives me the opportunity to understand the skills needed while allowing me
to put these skills into practice. This will enable me with all the necessary
knowledge and capabilities to pursue my dream. I will be introduced to the
biological, social and cultural elements involved in health care. Also this
course is specially designed for students seeking to major their respective
field and has a high rate of university entry.

ECU is of one of the
best young universities in the world. 
There are other colleges which offer similar programme. I have compared
and read lot of reviews about other colleges and ECU. There were lots of
positive reviews about ECU. The fee is also comparably less than many other
universities. Curtin College is one of the colleges which provides similar
programme.  But I prefer ECU over Curtin College
as ECU is ranked one of the top universities with world class and outstanding
facilities. Also ECU has won several awards which are given only to outstanding
universities. So I prefer ECU over other universities and colleges.

Diploma
of Science (Health Studies) at Edith Cowan College provides a successful and
smooth transition to ECU in order to pursue it I should complete five core
units which are Professional
Conduct and Communication, Human Structure and Function, Cultural Studies,
Professional and Academic Communication (Health), Evidence Based Practice in
Health and out of three options I choose to do major in Systems Physiology
because it is a core unit in the bachelor of biomedical science degree program
offered at ECU. Moreover, it helps me to understand the anatomy and physiology
of human organ systems, describe the role of the endocrine and nervous systems
in homeostatic control of human physiology and explain the homeostatic
mechanisms that regulate human organ systems, and maintain the human organism
within its environment. The unit Cultural studies are a core unit in both the
diploma and degree program. When I enter into ECU’s biomedical science degree
program I’m planning to do major in “Human Genetics” because it helps me pursue
my dream of becoming a biomedical scientist. It
has 8 units which are human evolution and ecology, human genetics, advanced
biomedical techniques, forensic genetics, human molecular genetics, biomedical
ethics, medical genetics, and developmental biology. By doing a major in this
field would make me eligible for lots of job opportunities other than
biomedical scientist such as specialists, research officers, research
assistants, laboratory managers, biomedical technicians, medical
representative.

After the completing my course I intend to come back to my
home country and live my dream of becoming a biomedical scientist. As a
biomedical scientist, I’ll carry out a range of laboratory and scientific tests
on tissue samples and fluids to help clinicians diagnose and treat diseases. I
have to also evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.

My work is extremely important to many hospital departments,
such as operating theatres   with wide ranging functions. For example, I
may work on medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes or AIDS screen for and
monitor a range of diseases or carry out tests for emergency blood
transfusions.

The bio medical science course provides a strong foundation
to pursue academic research, work in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.
Degrees in biomedical science include many areas that apply science to
medicine. After the completion of my degree, I can   pursue many different career options. Some
of these careers include immunologist, dental assistant, endocrinologist, medical doctor, physiologist, nurse and
research assistant. Careers in this field are often either research-oriented or
lab-focused. Three common career options in the biomedical sciences that
include both research and lab work include clinical laboratory technologist and
technician, biomedical scientist and epidemiologist.

Careers in this field are growing and pay well as the
outlook looks good for the future. Jobs can include lab technologist,
biomedical scientist and epidemiologist. Numerous opportunities exist for me
pursuing a course in biomedical sciences in India. It is a vast, happening
subject with great opportunities
for laboratory work, management, research, education, and consultancy.
Once I become qualified in the subject, I can work in the private sector or in
the various national healthcare laboratories. I can also opt for health protection agencies, or work
in forensic science departments,
international healthcare projects, go for voluntary work, get involved with
product manufacturers, pharmaceutical industries, or veterinary services. My
choices are immense.

Getting a job within the biomedical sector is very
competitive. In India, biotech companies and research institutes offer a
starting salary of 1.2 – 2.2 Lakh p.a. for graduates, although it is possible
to get a 3 lakh p.a. package as fresher. For Master’s degree holders it will
range between 1.8 – 3.2 Lakh p.a. I can also work as Junior Research Fellow
(JRF) or Senior Research Fellow after clearing the CSIR-NET entrance exam, and
ultimately working  towards my PhD. JRFs can earn around 12,000 – 18,000
per month, while SRFs can earn up to 25,000 per month.

After completing Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences I could
land with a job offer of 24,000 to 30,000 Euro p.a. in Europe or 45,000 USD
p.a. in the US. After working as a research assistant or staff scientist I can
also go for MBA (specializing in Technology Management, Strategic Management,
innovation Management, Marketing, International Business or
Entrepreneurship) and I can also pursue business development and consulting
roles with global pharmaceutical and biotech giants.

One perfect example is the partnership of Syngene
(subsidiary of Biocon) with Novartis (2004), Bristol-Myers Squibb (2007), Endo
Pharmaceuticals (2011), Abott (2012) and CytoSorbents (2013). Biocon and few
other contract research organisations (CRO) have been quite active in
recruiting foreign-return Indian biomedical scientists.

Biocon also took a nice initiative by introducing a 16-week
training program in collaboration with California-based Keck Graduate
Institute, with the objective of reducing skill gap and make young Indian
bio-medical students industry-ready. Even the Government is coming forward. In
keeping with the vision to turn India into a research powerhouse, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi declared $28 billion USD spending on Universal
Healthcare Scheme in India. The feature of this scheme is free check-ups for
everyone, and that will create an enormous amount of job opportunities for
biomedical scientists in the coming years.

The biomedical research sector is unique and rewarding. The
work is flexible and very stimulating intellectually. I will be working towards
the betterment of human health and saving lives, so it is very noble in itself.
